Error Message: Address Not Found
| What it means | Why it might be happening |
| The address is formatted correctly but does not match any address in the USPS database. | A typo in any part of the address, the street number, street name, city, or zip code, can prevent USPS from finding a match. If the address is new construction, the USPS database may be temporarily out-of-date, and the address may need to be confirmed by contacting your local post office. Check for other common cases for this error, such as an alternate street name. |
Steps to Investigate & Resolve Address Not Found
- Open the location and select Edit Address
- Review all address fields carefully, check the street number, street name, street direction, city, state, and zip code for typos or missing information
- If the street is known by alternate names, try a different variation to see if USPS recognizes it
- Confirm all required components are present: primary number, street name, and any applicable suite or unit number
- If the location is newly built or on a recently renamed road, the USPS database may not yet reflect it. You may select Mark User Reviewed to acknowledge the address and check back at a later date
Error Message: PO Box Invalid
| What it means | Why it might be happening |
| A PO Box number was provided, but USPS does not recognize it as valid for the zip code on file. | The PO Box number may contain a typo, may have changed, or may not correspond to the zip code entered. PO Box numbers are specific to individual post office locations, so an incorrect zip code can also cause this error. |
Steps to Investigate & Resolve PO Box Invalid
- Open the location and select Edit Address
- Confirm the PO Box number is correct, verify with your facilities team or directly with the location
- Confirm the zip code is accurate for that specific PO Box
- If needed, contact the local post office to verify the correct PO Box and zip code combination
- Update as needed and save
Error Message: PO Box Missing
| What it means | Why it might be happening |
| Based on the zip code on file, USPS requires a PO Box number for this address, but none was provided. | Some zip codes in the USPS database are associated specifically with PO Boxes. If a location uses a PO Box for mail delivery and it was not included when the address was entered, this error will appear. |
Steps to Investigate & Resolve PO Box Missing
- Open the location and select Edit Address
- Confirm the correct PO Box number for this location with your internal facilities or operations team, or directly with the location
- Add the PO Box number to Address Line 1 and verify the zip+4 is accurate
- Save the updated address
Error Message: Primary Number Invalid
| What it means | Why it might be happening |
| A primary number was provided, but USPS does not recognize it as valid for that street. Every street in the USPS database has an expected range of valid building numbers, if the number provided falls outside that range or does not match a known address, it will be flagged. | This is often caused by a typo in the street number, a number transposition (for example, 5015 entered as 5051), or an address that was entered from memory or an unofficial source rather than a verified document. |
Steps to Investigate & Resolve Primary Number Invalid
- Open the location and select Edit Address
- Check the building or street number in Address Line 1 carefully for typos or transpositions
- Confirm the number against an official source — a lease, invoice, or the address physically posted at the location
- Update if needed and save
Error Message: Primary Number Missing
| What it means | Why it might be happening |
| Your address is missing a primary number, the building or street number that appears at the beginning of Address Line 1 (for example, the 123 in 123 Main Street). USPS recognizes the street name, city, state, and zip code on file, but cannot verify the address without a primary number. |
This can occur when an address was entered with only a street name, imported from a system that did not capture the street number, or if the number was accidentally left out during manual entry. For special cases, such as malls, airports, or other environments where many businesses operate in a single location, confirm the street address for the primary location (with a primary number and street name) and be sure to include a suite number. Double-check that the street address is included in Address 1 and not Address 2.) |
Steps to Investigate & Resolve Primary Number Missing
- Open the location and select Edit Address
- Review Address Line 1 and confirm a building or street number is included at the start
- If you are unsure of the correct number, check a recent invoice, lease document, or confirm directly with the location
- Add the correct primary number and save
Error Message: Suite Number Invalid
| What it means | Why it might be happening |
| A suite number was included, but USPS either does not recognize it as valid for that building or does not have suite numbers on record for that address. This is one of the most common address errors and does not always mean the suite number is incorrect. | USPS postal data is updated regularly but is not always immediately current. For newer buildings, recently renovated spaces, or locations where suite configurations have changed, the USPS database may not yet reflect the correct information. In some cases, even long-existing locations may have incorrect data in the USPS database. |
Steps to Investigate & Resolve Suite Number Invalid
- Open the location and select Edit Address
- Confirm that you have the correct suite number for the location and that the suite number is in the same format as other tenants in that location
- Double-check that you have the correct prefix and number as posted at the location. For example, a building may require "Ste 100" instead of "Unit 100"
- Confirm the suite number matches what is physically posted at the location or listed on an official document such as a lease
- If the suite number is confirmed correct and the USPS tool still does not recognize it, the database may not yet be updated for that location. In this case, you may select Mark User Reviewed to acknowledge the address and move forward
Error Message: Suite Number Missing
| What it means | Why it might be happening |
| USPS requires a suite or unit number for this address, but none was provided. This is the most frequently occurring address error and is especially common for locations in commercial buildings, office parks, or retail developments where multiple tenants share the same street address. |
Suite numbers are often left out when addresses are entered quickly, copied from a system that does not capture them, or when the suite number simply was not known at the time the location was created. For large multi-location organizations, it is common for suite numbers to be missing across a number of locations, this does not mean deliveries have necessarily failed, but it does mean the address is not fully validated. When a suite number is missing, a carrier may only be able to deliver to the building, not the specific unit. Depending on the building and carrier, this may result in a package left in a common area, a missed delivery, or a returned shipment. In some cases, large-scale retail storefronts may require a suite or building number even if one is not known. These locations are part of a larger commercial development that share a single street address. When multiple businesses share a street address, suite, unit, or building numbers help to differentiate delivery destinations. |
Steps to Investigate & Resolve Suite Number Missing
- Open the location and select Edit Address
- Confirm the suite, unit, or floor number with your facilities team, the location manager, or an official document such as a lease
- Add the suite number to Address 1 or Address Line 2 and save
- If no suite number applies and USPS confirms the address is valid as entered, you may select Mark User Reviewed to acknowledge the address and move forward
Error Message: Suite Number Missing or Invalid
| What it means |
| USPS could not verify the suite information for this address but could not determine whether the number is missing or invalid. This error sometimes appears alongside a more specific suite error. If it appears on its own, it means the suite information needs to be reviewed but the exact issue could not be identified. |
Steps to Investigate & Resolve Suite Number Missing
Review the guidance for both Suite Number Missing and Suite Number Invalid above, and determine which scenario applies to your location.
Error Message: Undeliverable Address
| What it means | Why it might be happening |
| USPS recognizes this address but has flagged it as one where mail cannot be delivered directly. This typically means the location requires mail to be picked up from a post office, or that a special delivery arrangement is in place for that address. |
Some addresses, particularly in rural areas, certain commercial zones, or locations that have recently changed status, do not receive direct mail delivery according to USPS. This is not necessarily an error with how the address was entered, but rather a characteristic of how that address is classified in the USPS system. Locations that are new construction can sometimes result in this error. This means the USPS database has added the new address, but has not updated the delivery arrangements. When a suite number is missing, a carrier may only be able to deliver to the building, not the specific unit. Depending on the building and carrier, this may result in a package left in a common area, a missed delivery, or a returned shipment. |
Steps to Investigate & Resolve Undeliverable Address
- Confirm with the location or your facilities team how mail and packages are currently received at this site
- If an alternate deliverable address exists for this location, such as a PO Box or a different suite, update the address in GovDocs accordingly
- If the address is confirmed and no alternate delivery address exists, you may select Mark User Reviewed to acknowledge the address and flag this location internally for follow-up on the best delivery arrangement
Error Message: Unknown Street Name
| What it means | Why it might be happening |
| USPS could not match the street name in your address to a recognized street in its database. This may mean no match was found at all, or that there are multiple possible matches and USPS could not determine which one is correct. | Street names can vary depending on the source. A road may be known locally by a different name than what USPS has on record, or the name may have been abbreviated, misspelled, or formatted differently than USPS expects. Newly constructed roads may also not yet appear in the USPS database. |
Steps to Investigate & Resolve Unknown Street Name
- Open the location and select Edit Address
- Double-check that the street suffix (e.g. Av, Rd, St) and the street ordinal direction (e.g. N, S, E, W) are correct, an incorrect suffix or direction can result in an ambiguous address that cannot be validated and may trigger this error
- Check the street name in Address Line 1 carefully for typos or abbreviation mismatches (for example, Blvd vs. Boulevard, St vs. Street, or Hwy vs. Highway)
- If the road is known by multiple names, such as a highway designation, local name, or former name, try alternate versions to find what USPS recognizes
- If the road is newly constructed and not yet in the USPS database, you may select Mark User Reviewed to acknowledge the address and check back at a later date when the database may be updated
